Get Rid of
Odorous House Ants

(Sugar Ants)

Odorous House Ants are typically black in color and measure about an 1/8th of an inch long.  Most people call these ants Sugar Ants, as they can be seen going for food containing sugar.  They forage many types of food, depending on what nutrients the colony needs at that time.  These ants get their name from the odor they emit when they are squished or sense danger which releases a pheromone to alert the rest of the colony. While many people can detect this odor, not everyone’s nose does. Descriptions of the smell range from rotting coconut to bleu cheese.

Types of Ants

Odorous House Ants

These ants can nest outdoors under items on the ground, within landscape mulch, beneath loose bark on trees, under ground cover, in potted plants and within piles of items such as lumber, firewood or bricks. Nests can also be established inside homes, in walls, beneath carpeting and other suitable voids or spaces conducive to their needs.  Regular inspections and preventative service is typically recommended to find and treat new colonies, as they can move in from neighboring properties that may have an infestation.

Odorous House Ants can develop huge colonies containing thousands of workers and numerous queens. They can detect and avoid most common pesticides, so be aware that using an over-the-counter chemical can actually make an Odorous House Ant infestation worse.  This species can be difficult to establish control unless you find the colonies or sub-colonies and treat them directly or, indirectly with a strategic application of pesticides by a licensed professional.

End Odorous House Ant problems in 3 easy steps.

Step 1

Initial Inspection & Treatment

Inspect thoroughly and begin
treatment on the same day.

Inspection is always our first course of action when addressing a pest infestation. One of our professional Technicians will begin treatment by inspecting for the source of the infestation, existing damage, environmental factors, and any other pest problems.

Specific treatment techniques will be determined by our Technician at the time of service, depending on the scope and severity of the infestation. Common treatment techniques include inside treatment wherever activity is noted. Outside treatment includes a perimeter spray with an non-detectible control material, creating a barrier that keeps them out.

Step 2

Pro-active Treatment

Treatment every 2 weeks until
they’re gone

Odorous House Ants are one of the most difficult species of ants to erradicate, and some infestations are worse than others. Depending on circumstances, it may take a few followup treatments to gain full control over a Odorous House Ant infestation.

We recommend followup treatments every 2 weeks, or as needed. No contracts are required, and we will send an email reminder to you before each service.

Step 3
