Get Rid of Carpenter Ants
Carpenter Ants are the most common wood destroying organism pest found throughout Western Washington which can cause structural damage leading to unsafe conditions. These ants are commonly called the large black ants. They are Polymorphic meaning, different tasks are assigned to different-sized workers. They come in two distinct sizes, Majors and Minors. Majors will typically be ½ an inch or larger, while the Minors generally measure ¼ of an inch.
Types of Ants
Carpenter Ants are not seasonal and stay relatively active all year long. They typically spend the cold winter months sheltered, while mining out galleries for their growing colony. In the spring, mature colonies may produce winged reproductive ants called swarmers that will emerge to start new colonies. These swarms can often occur from satellite colonies within an infested structure. During the summer, Carpenter Ants can be found foraging at night. You may periodically see large ants in one area of a structure or climbing up the exterior. The main parent colonies can usually be found within 100 meters of a home nesting in stumps, dead limbs, landscape timbers or any other wood debris that can become an attractant for Carpenter Ants. A parent colony may establish a satellite colony in a structure where they can be found nesting in wall voids, attics, and crawl spaces.

There is some popular confusion about the difference between Carpenter Ants and Termites. Termites are actually quite rare in the Pacific Northwest, the most common termite in this region is the Subterranean Termite, which lives underground. The biggest difference is that termites actually eat wood, whereas Carpenter Ants chew the wood up but do not ingest it.
